Being in Common: HIV Prevention, Belonging and Care in Buenos Aires

Agostina Gagliolo presents this talk, based on her ethnographic research on PrEP in Buenos Aires, at the Berlin Anthropology Seminars, hosted by the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin together with the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient and the Ethnologisches Museum.

Drawing on fieldwork at an LGBTQ+ civil association and Combination Prevention Center, the talk follows how PrEP takes part in the making of what a group of gay men describe as a collectively inhabited environment, reshaping possibilities of belonging and ways of caring for the self and others. It also reflects on what the closure of the association in May 2025 reveals about sustaining HIV prevention when community-based spaces are dismantled.

“Under the radar”: Sustaining HIV and Sexual Health Prevention and Care Responses in Argentina amid the Dismantling of the State

At the European Association of Social Anthropologists conference, EASA2026 “Anthropology: Possibilities in a Polarised World,” Agostina Gagliolo presented this paper in the panel “Healthcare in a polarised world: Chronicity and fracture through perspectives from the Global South.”

The paper examines how HIV and sexual health responses are sustained in Argentina amid the dismantling of public health structures, following how state agents rely on discretion, relations, and creativity to keep these interventions going.

“Global Research” Lecture Series: Applying for European Fellowships and Programs

As part of the “Global Research” lecture series at the Institute of Anthropological Science, University of Buenos Aires, Agostina Gagliolo joined a conversation with Paülah Shabel on applying for European fellowships and programs. Drawing on her experience with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowship, she shared insights for researchers preparing their own applications. The session was held in a hybrid format and livestreamed on YouTube.
